Thank you for sharing in Dan’s celebration of life with us.

As we grieve his loss from us, we are comforted in knowing his gain is now Christ and faith is now sight.

We will always remember Dan’s kind heart, serving spirit and love for laughter. His faith was unshakeable, and his greatest desire was for others to know God’s love through Jesus Christ. He will be missed beyond words, but he is, as a dear friend shared, “being welcomed in by Heavenly host with [his] smile that could light up the heavens.”

Being able to engage one another with in the Church and with those outside of the church on issues in culture is important.

In this video we will recap rules of conversation engagem ent, what a worldview is and how a Christian worldview shapes how we see everything through Biblical lens's.

Scared to Share, We've All Been There

BE WITH JESUS!

Many times we are hesitant to share the Gospel because we are afraid we will say the wrong thing, say the right thing the wrong way, or in the wrong order.

Sometimes we think we aren’t scholarly enough to be counted worthy enough to share. Who’d listen anyway? On and on and on our reasons go for our hesitancy to share the Gospel.

As one who is gifted to evangelize and equip I am reminded of Acts 4:13. Peter & John have a moment where they are thrust into a setting pretty hostile, yet with many onlookers listening. They are thrust into a scene where they overcome NOT with fear or cowardice, rather courage, boldness & simple faith to share a supernatural message no matter what the cost.

We have to ask ourselves, where did this come from?

How did they arrive here?

Is there something for us to learn so that we may imitate them?

We see the answer to the response the religious leaders have to their boldness in 4 :13, “When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and took note that they had been with Jesus.”

WOW!

Did you see it?

Here’s how they and here’s how we walk in courage to share the Gospel regularly: BE WITH JESUS!

Remember being with Jesus isn’t religion, but relationship. It’s communion, not churchianity. It’s the ordinary spending time with the Extraordinary. It’s the children spending time with their Father. It’s the servants spending time with their Master. It’s the students spending time with their Teacher.

Boldness comes thru Being with Jesus.

How does this look practically?

1. remember to simply go pray and ask Jesus for a heart overcome by the overwhelming goodness of His grace, mercy & love.

2. remember He saves with His message by His Spirit, we do not.

3. remember Jesus always uses ordinary people who’ve encountered extraordinary grace to share.

Therefore, let us come to him today. Let us learn from Him, listen to Him and let Him share His message of Good News thru us in the everyday rhythms of life.

Amen? Amen!

Obstacles to Mission & Discipleship

Top 5 Obstacles...

Hey there-e ver been on a journey to somewhere and hit a pothole, roadblock or obstacle that sets you back?

Ever been faced with starting something new that you know is good for you, but feel like you have so many mental constraints, excuses or setbacks?

I know I have had my share of excuses and obstacles in life and particularly in relation to the mission of Jesus.

As we are going in the everyday we are to be making disciples of Jesus. In the eating, celebrating, working, resting, blessing and simple story telling we do everyday, we are to be making disciples of Jesus.

The question we are faced with is, what are the common obstacles we either face or make?

Once we have identified the obstacles, how do we overcome & stay there?

Here are top five obstacles to mission & discipleship I have experienced over the years:

5. Too Busy

My schedule is full, I have no more time to put towards the mission. What I have come to realize is my busy obstacle was a priority problem in my life. It was a question of is what I’m busy with supporting the priority of Jesus’s mission or supporting my own mission? Too busy became a distant memory while priority around seeing Jesus in the everyday, bringing Him and His message into the ordinary rhythms of life became regular.

4. Too Hard

Sharing the Gospel, my story, my life, my everything seemed insurmountable. It felt impossible for me to do. I felt inadequate and ill equipped. This way of thinking over the years has crept in and paralyzed me. How about you? What I have found is God patiently meet me in my feelings of inadequacy, ill equipping and plain old winey “it’s too hard” syndrome and remind me of some amazing realties: I am a child of God and am resourced with His Presence. I am part of a family, the Church, who is resourced to train me, coach me and support me. Finally in Jesus I already have everything I need done for me so that nothing is too hard!

3. Too Much

When I began thinking about missional living as discipleship I thought, that is too much to do. Yet as I began to realign my priorities around Jesus’s priorities in my everyday, I found the too much became too much fun! Being able to listen to people, hear their stories, share your’s, eat together, ask for prayer, ask to pray with and simply bless in the rhythms of life was TOO MUCH FUN!

2. Too Costly

Early on re-learning missional living as discipleship I thought “this is going to cost me a fortune.” I thought about how much food was involved and thought for sure I’m going to gain weight and lose time and money. The funny thing is I have found it to be the opposite. I have saved time by restructuring around our everyday rhythms, I have saved money because people love potlucks and I’ve actually lost weight, cumulatively speaking.

1. Too Selfish

The number one reason I found at the core of all the other reasons was I was too selfish. I like my space, my money, my time, my my my. The beauty of the Gospel is I have been crucified with Christ and NO LONGER LIVE, but Jesus lives in me so that the life I NOW LIVE is one of faith in Jesus who loved and gave Himself for me (Galatians 2:20).

The Gospel reality is I have died, by Jesus giving selflessly so that by trusting in him moment by moment I can live as a conduit of that selflessness in the everyday rhythms of life on Jesus’s mission of discipleship.

Maybe you have your own obstacles or excuses not mentioned above. Identify, Shine the Gospel Light into them & Intentionally turn towards Jesus mission & get going!

Our Story, His Story

The Divine Intertwined With The Ordinary

Our lives are one big story being written and read.

Our story is God’s story written by Him as the Author.

His story is always one of Creation , Rebellion , Redemption & Restoration .

Every people group have these elements within the story of their life. The questions become, do we see these elements and can we hear these elements in others lives as they share their lives with us?

The aim, as followers of Jesus, is to grow in greater Gospel fluency, so that our lives are ones of greater Jesus dependency .

One of the main ways this happens is through being able to understand the storyline of our lives and others. Put another way, how has the Divine intertwined with the ordinary?

First , over this week I encourage us to write out our story using the elements of Creation, Rebellion, Redemption & Restoration.

Creation : In how God made me and placed me in the family I was raised, what was that like ?

Rebellion : How did I live i n rebellion (sin, trespass, iniquities) against God?

Redemption : When did I come to saving faith in Jesus Christ & what was that like ?

Restoration : What is the final hope I live for, from and to?

Secondly , over the next week and beyond, I encourage us to listen more intentionally to one another’s stories.

Not just stories of conversion to faith in Christ, but everyday stories of life.

Let’s not just hear, but listen intently through the filter of Creation, Rebellion, Redemption & Restoration, so that we can encourage in Gospel Fluency unto greater Jesus dependency!

Here are some questions to be asking as we are listening:

Creation : who/what is getting credit for who you are?

Rebellion : why are things not the way they should be and who is responsible for it?

Redemption : who/what will rescue me from the brokenness?

Restoration : what will the world look like when it is as it should be and what will this worlds focus be?

Our lives are God’s story written out on the pages of our ordinary, everyday life.

He’s moving us back to Himself by way of redemption from rebellion to complete restoration.

Do we see this pattern?

Do we listen for it in one another?

Are we willing to help apply the Gospel more fluently in one another thru story?

Let’s press in and be Story of God people!

The Story Formed Way Part 1

What a Story!

Do you know the Bible is God’s story ?

Do you know it has four parts?

Creation, Rebellion, Redemption and Restoration.

What if we began to read the Bible from the filter of His Story formed way?

What if we saw our story through the same filter?

How awesome it is to know that God loved to create all US to bear His image, reflect Him and enjoy Him in all we do. What a glorious purpose.

Yet, rebellion entered the world through our first parents, Adam & Eve because Rebellion in the heavens occurred via Lucifer, Satan & known in Genesis 3 as the serpent.

We are all now born fractured by this rebellion and liv e from it.

We now seek to promote our image, reflect and enjoy ourselves in whatever we feel.

We now stand separated from God by our rebellion, in need of Redemption.

Instead of God leaving us to ourselves, He promised in Genesis 3 that He would bring from the seed of a woman One who’d crush the head of the serpent. Over history we have seen many who were types of redeemers, but none who could redeem towards restoration.

But God planned in advance that He would come in the person of Jesus Christ to live perfectly obedient to all demands of the Father; die a perfect death satisfying the demands of pure justice for rebellion; resurrect from the dead defeating sin, it’s power, satan & death itself; ascend to the right hand of His Father; send His Spirit to restore what rebellion in sin ha d fractured.

He invited all who hear this GOOD NEWS, the Gospel, to believe and become His Children. This would set the stage for the redeemed process of restoring and making all things new on earth as it is in heaven.

Now we have Hope in this process that one day soon He will come as the Prince of Heaven on His warrior horse to put to death in the lake of fire the Dragon Devil and death itself.

All of this to usher in the perfect place where God dwells with His people and they with Him-the New Heavens & Earth . This being the fullness of restoration!

Oh Those Children!

Let the little children...

The famous sentence of Jesus. Can you complete the sentence?

Let the little children COME TO ME, DO NOT HINDER them, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these (Matthew 19:14). How amazing is that?

God incarnate, supreme King of the universe walking in the square of town is a kid magnet.

His disciples didn’t get the memo that Jesus welcomed the children; therefore they shushed and pushed the kids away. We’ve all been there, right? Thinking Jesus wants our missional community or big church family gathering time to be tidy, clean, quiet, put together, no mess, no interruptions, etc. If only the distractions of needy children, screaming kids, inquisitive, creative and attention craving children were put in their own place, then we could have a good and profitable time together. This Jesus said, NEVER!

He said, let little children come to me and do not put barriers in their way. Don’t shush them away. Don’t push them away. Don’t make them built in outcasts, but WELCOME THEM! Jesus had them crawling all over him. Jesus had them on his lap. Jesus was talking with them.

The reason He gave for this invitation was t hat the Kingdom of Heaven belonged to those who were like little c hildren. Let that humble us for the rest of our lives, right?

These kids were learners, not know-it-alls. These kids were dependers, not independent. These kids were lovers of one greater than them knowing they had it amazingly good in Jesus.

As in the days Jesus welcomed the little children, so let us be missional communities that welcome, love, invite, engage, listen and learn from the little children.

As in the days Jesus welcomed the little children, so may we be reminded that He welcomed us like children needing a Father in Heaven who loved us with an everlasting, always and forever love.

It's All About Jesus

The Core of Missional Community Life & Mission

It’s All About Jesus!

As the early church was birthed, recorded in Acts, we see that it was ALL ABOUT JESUS!

We see Jesus send His presence to overflow in them, marking and making them mobile tabernacles of His presence.

We see Jesus embolden His people to preach the Good News that God came to save sinners by living perfectly to the Law, dying substitutionally and being raised to secure eternal life and the forgiveness of sins for all who’d believe.

We see Jesus set His people on a trajectory of gathering together for prayer and equipping while then sending them back to their homes to do life together in the everyday while on His mission to share more of the Gospel.

We see Jesus set His people to live out radical one another life where they encouraged one another, prayed with one another, shared all things with one another and lived on Jesus’s mission with one another.

We see Jesus encouraging them that as they suffered together on mission He’d be with them, never leaving nor forsaking.

We see worldly governments and religious people try and stop Jesus’s people from gathering, growing and going but Jesus held true to His word-"I will build my church and the gates of Hell will not prevail-ever!" (Matthew 16:18)

Remember today as we gather, grow and go in missional communities it is all about Jesus.

We gather to do life because Jesus is our life.

We grow into this life by Jesus who forms u s thru faith by His Spirit in us.

We go sharing this life in the everyday because Jesus sends us and goes with us.

It’s all about Jesus.

Let the Lord Establish Your Household

God has appointed and charged parents to be the primary disciples of their children. Because of this foundational truth, we want to help resource parents with the tools that would help them in their calling to train up their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

For an in-depth study of what it means to let the Lord establish your household, and how to train your children in the wisdom of the Lord, we recommend Entrusted with a Child’s Heart by Dave and Betsy Corning. They have many years of experience and wisdom that you will benefit from. One of my favorite resources in the book is a concept called “ Full Circle Discipline.” Betsy teaches other moms how to walk their children through repentance and forgiveness during a discipline event. It has been so helpful in our family!

We also recommend Parenting by Paul Tripp and Give them Grace by Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson.

We at City of Joy Church believe it is beneficial to include children in our worship services. There are many reasons for this. Here’s a few articles that outline some of the major reasons why we feel convicted in this area.

The Gospel is the Good News of Jesus Christ! That He has taken our punishment on himself and has given us all of His rewards- adopting us into His family!

The Gospel is the motivation to be who we already are in Christ! This changes the way we read the Bible. It is not just a book of rules or list of commands from God. When we connect the commands of scripture to the fuel to accomplish those commands (the gospel), it changes the way we read it.
